English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Welcome, English learners! This page will help you find programs and resources for learning English, preparing for the U.S. citizenship test and more. The staff at your local library is also happy to help; and our catalog features many items that you can check out. 

Our top English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs are:

  • English Practice: There are weekly English practice groups at several branches and online where you can practice with an instructor and other English language learners. Programs do not require registration and you can attend as many as you want.
  • English Classes offered by the Loudoun Literacy Council: Classes are led by English teachers and students are separated by level.
  • Citizenship Preparation: Learn the process for becoming a citizen. Our programs cover eligibility, how to complete the application, the interview with an immigration officer and the material on the civics test. Programs are offered quarterly.   • All LCPL programs are free and open to the public. Questions on how to get started?

ONLINE EDUCATION

Brainfuse Online Tutoring

HelpNow: An array of tutoring services designed for students of any age, including assistance with reading, writing and citizenship test preparation. HelpNow services include expert academic tutoring and self-study tools to empower users to study at their own pace or collaborate with peers and teachers. A full-service test center offers practice tests for all levels in math, reading, and writing as well as college preparatory tests — including the SAT.  Live tutoring is available seven days a week from 2 to 11 p.m.

JobNow: A suite of services that features a Foreign Language Lab and Spanish-speaking support. Users may access live, on-demand assistance from expert Job Coaches for assistance with interview preparation, resume creation, or job searching. Live assistance is available seven days a week, 2 to 11 p.m.

Hoopla

Download or stream eBooks, comics, music and movies straight to your tablet or smartphone. Enjoy them as often as you like during the borrowing periods. There are also a great collection of items for ESL students.

  • What you get: Borrow 10 titles per month
  • Borrowing periods: 21 days for eBooks, eAudiobooks and eComics; 72 hours for movies and TV shows; 7 days for music

This streaming service offers over 30,000 independent films, documentaries, and classics on demand, plus over 5,000 Great Courses. Customers get 30 tickets per month. The number of tickets needed for each title varies.
