Welcome to Zinio, Loudoun County Public Library’s online magazine collection. Now you can download current magazine issues to read on your PC, Mac, tablet, or smartphone. With more than 100 magazines on a wide range of topics, you’re sure to find something you like.
Zinio is fun and easy to use, but there are a few things you need to know:
- After you select a magazine, you’ll be asked to create a Loudoun County Public Library Zinio account. The next step is to create a second account with Zinio, the company that hosts the library’s magazine platform. (It’s OK to use the same user name and password combination.) Confused? Don’t worry, after this setup you’ll only have to log in once when you check out.
- Checkouts are for single issues, not for a subscription. So if you check out a monthly magazine, you’ll need to come back the following month if you want the next issue.
- The Zinio app is for reading only. Selection and checkout must be done on a computer, not from within the app. Sorry.
- Some Zinio features do not work with Internet Explorer 8 or below. We recommend updating or using a different browser, such as Chrome or Firefox.

Privacy issues

Questions have been raised in the library world about whether we put our patrons' privacy at risk by offering OverDrive downloads to the Kindle. Here is one statement, from librarian Sarah Houghton, who often blogs about privacy issues and intellectual freedom. To put it simply, when you download a Kindle Book from an OverDrive library, you are routed to Amazon.com, where you complete the transaction -- presumably allowing Amazon.com staff access to your reading choices.
LCPL, like all libraries, takes privacy very seriously, sometimes more seriously than our patrons do. For example, we don't keep a record of what you checked out in the past -- once you return library materials, the transaction disappears -- and occasionally we get complaints about that from people who would like to make a list of what they have already read. So it is a little disturbing to hand over even a small portion of that privacy protection to a third party.
We believe the benefits of the service outweigh the possible risks, but wanted you to be aware of these concerns. The Kindle Book download service is an enhancement to our library services and collection and one that that is opted into by our borrowing public. The use of Kindle Books requires an individual Amazon.com account which has a previously agreed to Terms of Service. If you want to avoid this third party contact, we have other options available to you, including traditional books, audiobooks, and eBooks in other formats.

Sony Reader Wi-Fi Reviewed

In case you're in the market for an e-reader, here's a review of Sony's new WiFi Reader -- currently the only dedicated reading device that allows the library user to manage the complete selection, checkout, and download process entirely on the device itself. At $149, it costs a little more than its main competitors, the Kindle and Nook. But if you've ever handled a Sony Reader, you know that it is a sleek and lovely device; it just looks and feels nicer. As always, whether it's worth it or not depends on what features are important to you.

No Christmas for Spenser

Just got word from OverDrive that the eAudiobook Xmas Spenser has been cancelled by the publisher, Books on Tape. I checked the Books on Tape website and they now show the release date as 10/2/12. All holds on the title were removed by OverDrive and we have no way of knowing who placed them, so this post will have to serve as both notice and our apology.
