Requirements for Accessing the Databases Correctly

Browser types:
Internet Explorer 6 and above, Netscape 7 and above, or Firefox 1.0 and above.

Read the basics about firewalls. If you have installed personal firewall software or are behind a firewall it must not block URL redirects. If you have personal firewall software and are having problems accessing the databases, try disabling the firewall and then accessing the site. (Be sure to enable it again when you are finished using the database.) If you need to create a list of trusted URLs for your firewall, click here.

If you are behind a firewall that is not personal software, contact your systems administrator.

How to find out what version your browser is.

Click on "Help" on the menu bar of your browser. Select the "About..." text. Full details about your browser as well as the version will be detailed.

How to enable cookies.

If you are using Internet Explorer 6:

  • Click "Tools" from your browser toolbar.
  • Then choose "Internet Options".
  • The click the "Privacy" tab.
  • Move the slider bar up and down to activate and set the privacy level for cookies (the text to the right of the slider tells you the current settings for the level you have selected).
  • Click "Apply" then "OK" when you are finished.

If you are using Netscape 5, 6, or 7:

  • Click "Edit" from your browser toolbar.
  • Then choose "Preferences".
  • Then click the "Privacy & Security" or the "Advanced" tab.
  • Now choose "Cookies".
  • Click the "Enable all cookies" option to enable cookies in your browser.
  • Click "OK".

If you are using Firefox 2:

  • Go to the "Tools" menu.
  • Select "Options"
  • Select the "Privacy"tab.
  • Check the box corresponding to "Accept cookies from sites".
  • Click "OK" to save changes.

If you are using AOL 7, 8:

  • From the AOL Toolbar select "Settings".
  • Select "Preferences".
  • Select "Internet Properties (WWW)".
  • Select the "Privacy" tab.
  • Select "Advanced".
  • Deselect "override automatic cookie handling" button.
  • Click "OK" to exit.

If you are using Safari for Macintosh OS X:

  • Click on "Safari" from the top menu and select "Preferences".
  • Click on the padlock graphic titled "Security".
  • Under "Accept Cookies" be sure that "Only from sites you navigate to" is selected.

African American Experience : Online collection on African American life for definitive research and homework help on African American history and culture. It includes hundreds of primary documents, slave narratives, photographs and audio clips.

America the Beautiful : Each of the 50 states, plus Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the major territories is covered in depth on the history, geography, economics, government, culture and major cities, plus biographical profiles of important people and articles on famous places and natural wonders. There are also photographs, illustrations, maps and audio slide shows for each state.

Ancestry Library Edition : Trace your amazing personal history with the world’s largest online collection of family records and resources. It includes billions of names from U.S., U.K., and Canadian census and vital records; immigration and passport records; military histories and records; photos; and more. A learning center and other tools help you get started and put your research together. This service is available only in library branches.

Biography Resource Center : Comprehensive database of biographical information on more than 180,000 people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas. Search for people based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death years and places, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender , or combine criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search path.

Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia : This database contains thousands of articles, extensive hyperlinking, bibliographies, and links to other sources of information on the web. The Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia Online is updated monthly.

Health and Wellness Resource Center and Alternative Health Module : Use this Resource Center to find magazines, journals, newspapers, definitions, directories, and more than 700 streaming videos on all aspects of health and wellness. Included are links to diet, cancer, and health assessment sites as well as government databases. Material contained in this resource center is intended for informational purposes only.

Heritage Quest Online : Discover where your American past begins with this comprehensive treasury of genealogical sources. It features U.S. federal census records, local and family histories, Revolutionary War records, Freedman’s Bank records, memorials and petitions to the U.S. Congress, and the Periodical Source Index (PERSI) article citations from the Allen County Library. 

Historical Newspapers : Search the complete run of four American newspapers - Christian Science Monitor , New York Times , Wall Street Journal , and Washington Post - into the 1990s. View articles or entire pages as they appeared when published, browse historical topics, or view a timeline of major events in American history. For more current articles, please use the link for each newspaper.

History Resource Center US : An integrated collection of primary documents, secondary reference sources, and journal articles covering all areas of United States history from pre-colonial times to the present day.

History Resource Center World : Featuring extensive coverage of the 20th century, the database also includes content on the ancient Mediterranean, Near East, Asia, Middle East, Latin America, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. From antiquity to the present, world history curricula is reflected by content from over 2,000 primary sources, 25 reference titles, and from 110 academic journals.

In the First Person : Provides in-depth indexing of more than 4,000 collections of personal narratives in English from around the world, including letters, diaries, memoirs, and autobiographies, and other personal narratives. No passwords or registration required.

Infotrac Religion and Philosophy : Religion and the related areas of philosophy, archaeology and anthropology.

Junior Edition - K12 : This periodical database is designed for students in junior high and middle school, with magazines, newspapers and reference books (most are full text) for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more.

Kid's Edition - K12 : This periodical database is designed for elementary school students, with easy access to full-text magazines, newspapers and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more.

Kids InfoBits : Kids InfoBits meets the research needs of students in kindergarten through grade 5. It features a visually graphic interface, a subject-based topic tree search and full-text, age-appropriate information.

Lands and People Online : Lands and People Online is the leading encyclopedia of countries and cultures geared to students . Every country in the world is described by land, people, economy, history and government as well as Facts and Figures, maps and flags. It includes an Electronic Atlas and a Global News Desk .

Learning Express Library : Provides a variety of free practice tests , including civil services exams; EMS, firefighter and law enforcement exams; military exams; and real estate exams. You will need to create an account the first time you login to the site.

Legal Forms : Provides a wide selection of legal, business and personal forms, including many popular legal forms specific to Virginia. Includes real estate contracts, wills, pre-marital agreements, and forms for bankruptcy, divorce, and landlord-tenant law.

Legal Trac : Provides indexing for more than 1,400 titles including major law reviews, legal newspapers, bar association journals, and international legal journals. It also contains law-related articles from over 1,000 additional business and general interest titles. This database is accessible through Find It Virginia . To access, choose "Loudoun County Public Library" from the list of Libraries, enter your LCPL library card barcode number (with no spaces) where it asks for your barcode number, click submit, and choose Legal Trac from the list of databases.

LISTA: Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) provides coverage on subjects such as librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, and information management.  LISTA indexes nearly 600 periodicals plus books, research reports, and proceedings. With coverage dating back to the mid-1960s, it is the oldest continuously produced database covering the field of information science.

Literature Resource Center : Critical analysis of literature and biographies of authors . High school and undergraduate level.

LitFinder : Access to thousands of poems, stories, essays, speeches and plays.

Live Homework Help : Free tutoring in math, science, English, and social studies. For Grades K-12, College Intro, and Adult Learners. Available Sunday through Thursday 3pm to midnight.

Los Angeles Times : The voice of the West Coast, with news on politics, the film industry, and trends that are sure to spread. Search full text articles dating back to 1985. User Guide (PDF)

MagillOnLiterature : MagillOnLiterature™ is the definitive, online source for editorially reviewed critical analyses. This database includes Masterplots, Masterplots II, Cyclopedia of World Authors, Cyclopedia of Literary Characters, Magill's Literary Annual 1990-2002, Magill's Guide to Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature, Magill Book Reviews, and selected essays from World Philosophers and Their Works.

Mango Languages is an online language learning product that combines audio and written lessons.  All courses are self-paced, with the option to repeat difficult portions and to test knowledge gained in each lesson.  Twelve languages are offered: Brazilian Portuguese, German, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Greek, French, Russian, ESL Polish, ESL Spanish, and ESL Brazilian Portuguese. 

Military and Intelligence Database : Updated daily and offers direct access to more than 600 military-related and general interest periodicals, with more than 500 of them displayed in full text.

Morningstar Online : Comprehensive Morningstar reports on stocks and mutual funds and exclusive Morningstar ratings to help guide investors. Morningstar online gives patrons access to analysts' independent opinions and recommendations on investments and allows patrons to assemble their selections into a portfolio for further research.

netLibrary eBooks : netLibrary is a comprehensive collection of online books (eBooks) and resource materials. Ebooks can be viewed online by creating a personal user account.

New Book of Knowledge Online : The New Book of Knowledge Online is a fun-to-use encyclopedia for children . Wonder questions, facts and figures, projects and experiments, literary selections, and Internet links to carefully evaluated related sites are a few of its many features. NBK Online features a current events site - NBK News - that is updated weekly and includes five news stories written especially for the site.

New Book of Popular Science : The New Book of Popular Science Online goes well beyond a simple Internet adaptation of the print set. The 400 articles that form the site's hub, or SciClopedia, are divided into a dozen categories and are supplemented by such online-only features as Fun Facts, Careers articles, NewsBytes, SkyWatch, Ask Pop Sci and SciZone . Science Resource Center : Science Resource Center is an in-depth, one-stop source for all science-related research needs. It focuses on key concepts taught in classrooms, including earth science, history of science, life science and physical science.
