"Watching my children growing up free made
me think about my own childhood and not growing up free. So this is a cautionary tale about the most important thing—freedom. Kids in America, and in Europe, have little appreciation of the significance of the Berlin Wall and what it meant to the people who lived behind it... so I had to draw it. I am honored my book has been selected and I look forward to meeting the Loudoun community and sharing our stories." –Peter Sís

Through spare text and bold, powerful illustrations, Sís tells of his life in Communist Czechoslovakia, especially his yearning for freedom, his attraction to Western pop culture, and his determination to embrace his creativity. Peter Sís is an internationally admired artist who has been named a MacArthur Fellow and has twice received Caldecott Honors.

Books will be available at all branches of the Loudoun County Public Library beginning September 11, 2009.
